THE JOURNEY

In February of 2021, I established an annual Black History Month series at WHSV. Today, the series continues to highlight organizations, community members and places that uplift Black communities throughout the Shenandoah Valley.

The Journey 2023: ‘Visions of Progress: Portraits of Dignity, Style and Racial Uplift’ exhibition

“Visions of Progress: Portraits of Dignity, Style and Racial Uplift” is an exhibition at the University of Virginia that showcases portraits of African American people photographed by the Holsinger Studio in the early 1900s.

The Journey 2023: Just One Sister Circle

Just One Sister Circle aims to uplift Black women in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County area and beyond. Through events, scholarships and networking, the ladies strive to make sure every woman knows she is enough.

The Journey 2023:  Allen Chapel AME Church

Churches play a vital role in Black communities across the country. This story highlights the oldest church in Staunton, Virginia. We sit down with historians, church members and scholars to learn how these religious institutions have and continue to support Black communities well beyond Sunday Service.

The Journey 2022

This video combines all four stories from 2022. Last year, the focus was on leaders that have had a tremendous impact on Black communities in the Shenandoah Valley from sports, farming to social justice.
